January's News Letter

What is my child learning about in Reading?

This month your child is learning about author's purpose.  Learning to decide why the author is writing to their audience is very important.  He/She is learning to determine whether the author is writing to persuade, inform, or entertain.  Making connections while reading will help raise your child's level of comprehension.  You can help your child by practicing skills such as visualizing (creating a picture in his/her mind) regarding the story he/she is reading.  Your child can also asking questions before, during, and after reading their story.  Forming questions sets a purpose for reading and children are more likely to finish their story and recall the events that took place in the story.
